And I found that I had to just block out their wonderful comments while I inscribed books or I would have scribbled gibberish.

Maybe we only think we can multi-task (converse on the phone and drive, e.g.) Maybe no one can really do it and we (writers) are the only ones who truly know htsi. Of course, before my first book was published, I would have paid to have such problems. :) Oy!Jessica Loureyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11157662092822156124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529128955266044151.post-19270778891366591202011-10-21T14:45:38.763-04:002011-10-21T14:45:38.763-04:00Great post and great idea, Kathleen! And, yes, Alan, it's really best if no one talks to me when I sign or you just never know what I might end up writing in their book because sometimes my hand writes what's coming out of my mouth. I think the excitement and adrenalin of being a "star" at a signing messes with your memory.

I use the trick of asking everyone to spell their names for me while I write them down on a pad of paper, too, saying that even though I know them, I want to make doubly sure I don't make a mistake on the inscription. That trick has saved me many times!

And I've learned that I can't talk while signing. I have to create a little bubble of silence while I sign, then refocus on the conversation with the person in front of me.Beth Groundwaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13999372882748655834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529128955266044151.post-14537046179879839372011-10-21T13:54:51.604-04:002011-10-21T13:54:51.604-04:00Yow! I have botched a number of inscriptions because my hand had forgotten how to write.Darrell Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08394984700734588887noreply@blogger.com
