I had buck teeth, huge glasses, frizzy too-short hair, and a huge scar across the side of my face. I was teased unmercifully. My family was poor so I didn't have a nice wardrobe. And body issues? Whew. My dad told me I had a "fat girl inside struggling to get out." So Jane Eyre really "spoke" to me.

On the other hand, when I showed up at my 25th high school reunion, there was a lot of shock on people's faces. (Especially the guys!)

I just needed time to grow up!Joanna Campbell Slanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01951637123269159053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529128955266044151.post-52732362561094194202009-01-26T22:04:00.000-05:002009-01-26T22:04:00.000-05:00Joanna - Why would someone who looks like you be i...Joanna - Why would someone who looks like you be inspired by the tale of a "plain girl"?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529128955266044151.post-63533814392728698212009-01-26T15:29:00.000-05:002009-01-26T15:29:00.000-05:00This weekend I listened to a terrific lecture by P...This weekend I listened to a terrific lecture by Penelope Lively, one of my favorite writers. (Try Heat Wave and The Photograph; both, especially the former, are arguably crime fiction). She relates writing fiction to history. In writing both, the author is trying to explain what happened. Take a listen.

http://streaming.yale.edu/opa/podcasts/audio/schools/humanities/mccullough_050908.mp3Keith Raffelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02926077627965529183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529128955266044151.post-77738004270534224912009-01-26T15:27:00.000-05:002009-01-26T15:27:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Keith Raffelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02926077627965529183noreply@blogger.com
